Relationship of Ship Size to Transit Performance in a Channel Section containing Cross Current

Abstract

Special environmental conditions occur in many restricted waterways which provide a challenge to transiting navigators. One condition found in some harbors is a waterway section where a significant current enters from the side at an angle to the transit path and gradually realigns its direction to coincide with the transit path. A recent study conducted at CAORF provides an insight into the difficulties of maneuvering through this current condition and the effect of ship size and the degree of difficulty. Results and observations from the study are presented. The process followed in conducting the study described in the paper suggests the general methodology for studying special environmental conditions in specific waterways.
