Abstract

Samples obtained during April and June from the six sampling stations in Galveston Bay indicated lower concentrations of inorganic nitrogen than found during the winter months. Algal growth potentiall assays using the mixed phytoplankton population present in the sample show that additional of nitrogen, particularly in June, significantly stimulated growth. Some phytoplankton growth also occurred in those samples to which iron was added. Often, however, some phytoplankton growth occurred in samples (particularly Morgan's Point) to which no additional nutrients were added. This indicates that some factor other than nutrients is limiting phytoplankton growth in Galveston Bay.
