This publication was originally prepared as a part of the National Estuarine Pollution Survey conducted in 1968 and 1969. It is the product of a group of scientists led by staff members of the University of North Carolina Institute of Marine Sciences. The four volumes include a comprehensive survey of scientific information through 1969, as well as a new system for the classification of coastal ecosystems.
