Abstract
A 38-mi, 6- in. pipeline which, initially, will move ethylene produced at the Shell Chemical Co plant at Deer Park on the Houston Ship Channel to Texas City, was completed recently. Probably the most unusual aspect of the new line is the fact that it was designed to comply with Department of Transportation regulations for both oil and gas pipelines. This is based on Shell's intent to switch the line from its initial gaseous service to liquid service at a future date. The entire line was hydrostatically tested to 100% of specified minimum-yield strength. Installation of the line was based on conventional techniques with most of the welds x-rayed and a minimum cover over the line of 4 ft
