Abstract

Galveston Island's treated water is supplied from the city of Houston, transported across Galveston Bay through two, 2-mile long, 30-in. cast iron pipelines, each 100 years old. Over the past several years, there have been leaks and breaks in the Bay crossing pipes as well as in other parts of the transmission system. The most recent break was discovered in March 1996 when a tender for the railroad drawbridge observed a water boil above the older pipeline. The water is about 25 ft deep and the pipe is buried 7 ft below the mudline. The city immediately began an inspection to define the problem and investigate possible repairs, and engaged CH2M HILL to review the situation and make recommendations for permanent repairs
