Abstract
The morphological and physiological characteristics of the nanobenthic diatom, Nitzschia ovalis Arnott, were examined and compared to other closely related diatoms. The cytological characters of cell outline, shape of chromatophores, and colony morphology were used to distiguish live cells of this species from the other species. A key was established to differentiate. ovalis from the other species based on characteristics seen with electron microscopy. Characters unique for each species, the section Lanceolatae, and the genus Nitzschia were discussed. The biogeographical status of N. ovalis as a cosmopolitan species with strong euryhaline and eurythermal characteristics was suggested.
