Abstract

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's creel program estimates total daylight sport-boat fishing pressure and landings using intercept interviews conducted at boat ramps. These boat ramps are listed on a master survey site list that is updated annually. However, not all sport-boat fishing activity is surveyed or accounted for because some sport-boat fishing trips originate from areas other than boat ramps. To obtain a better coverage of the coast and improve the harvest estimates, it was necessary to identify all boat access sites and determine which were surveyable and how. Between December 1982 and January 1983 a total of 209 non-surveyed boat access sites were identified in seven Texas bay systems. Seventy-two of these non-surveyed boat access sites could be added to the master survey site list. There were 121 access sites that would require boats to survey and 16 access sites that were not used by sport fishermen.
