Abstract
A major resource of the Texas Gulf Coast has been an abundant supply of low cost water from two major aquifers below Harris and Galveston counties. The phenomenon of land subsidence due to overpumping was noticed as early as the 1940's in the Texas City area. The nature and cause of subsidence are explained. The Harris-Galveston Coastal Subsidence District was created in 1975 by the Texas Legislature to solve the problem.
