Abstract

The purpose of this report is to provide case studies of site cleanup projects utilizing bioremediation. This report is one of four volumes which are the first in a series of studies that will be prepared by the Federal agencies to improve future remedy selection at contaminated sites. For projects that are ongoing, interim findings will be updated in future publications as additional data become availabe. The case studies were developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the US Department of Defense (DoD), and the US Department of Energy (DOE). They present cost and performance information for full-scale remediation efforts and several large-scale demonstration projects and were prepared retrospectively, based on available information and interviews with project personnel. The case studies are meant to serve as primary reference sources, and contain information on the site; contaminants and media treated; technology and vendor; cost and performance; and points of contact for the technology application. The studies contain varying levels of detail, reflecting the differences in the availability of data and information. Full-scale cleanup efforts are not conducted primarily for the purpose of technology evaluation, and data collection is often limited to establishing compliance with contractual requirements or regulatory levels. This volume contains reports on nine projects that include bioventing and land treatment technologies, as well as a unique, large-scale slurry-phase project. In these projects, petroleum hydrocarbons are the most frequent contaminants of concern. Two land treatment projects in this volume represent completed cleanups at creosote sites.
