Queer bioethics: LGBTQI medical history & contemporary ethics

Abstract

In this historically informed talk, Dr. Wahlert covers a range of biomedical examples that explain the morally and bioethically fraught relationship between LGBT persons and the biosciences. Long pathologized and repeatedly cast as adversaries to medical surveillance, LGBT and queer populations nevertheless found themselves on the forefronts of grassroots and political healthcare activism. Focusing on recent tension regarding disability protections for HIV-positive and transgender persons, Dr. Wahlert will offer an analysis of ways in which queer politics and queer bioethics are potential allies, but often in tension with one another. In closing, the talk will cover a survey of LGBT related bioethics under current debate: from pediatric ethics for intersex children to gender testing in sports to reproductive ethics for lesbian, gay, and transgender parents.
