Abstract

On December 9, 1983, the Commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Virginia, the State of Maryland, the District of Columbia, the Chesapeake Bay Commission and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency pledged to restore and protect the Chesapeake Bay. This commitment, known as the Chesapeake Bay Agreement of 1983, called for the preparation and implementation of coordinated plans to improve and protect the water quality and the living resources of the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay Restoration and Protection Plan is the first iteration of the planning effort implemented in response to this commitment.
