Abstract

As we move into the 21st century, Texans in the Houston region face many environmental challenges. With increasing population and economic growth, we continue to add additional stresses to the region's natural resources and physical life support systems. The effects are already apparent in terms of air pollution, fears of various pollutants, and loss of habitat and open space. Unfortunately, technological and engineering solutions may be unable to keep pace with the additional pollutants added to air, water and soil or the changes from human impacts o ecosystems. The challenge for us all if we are to continue to build and change the region's environment is for private and corporate citizens of the region to find solutions. These solutions need to balance economic development with the protection of human health, the conservation of the region's precious natural resources and the improvement of the quality of life for all citizens. This report provides many workable solutions that people in this region believe will address these difficult issues.
