Abstract

Most of the submerged vegetation in the Mediterranean Sea consists of three major sea grass species: Posidonia oceanica, Cymodocea nodosa, and Zostera noltii. This article presents a laboratory analysis of the effects of increasing pH on the ability of these sea grasses to photosynthesize. In shallow environments, estimated reductions in each species were found to be relatively small and were even smaller in deeper regions.
