Abstract

The occurrence of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Gulf of Mexico is rare. Review of the available literature and historical records has yielded only six verifiable humpback whale accounts, all from the eastern portion of the Gulf. On 19 February 1992 a humpback whale was sighted approximately 0.5 km north of the Houston Ship Channel, off Galveston, Texas. This represents the western-most sighting of a humpback whale in the Gulf of Mexico and the first such sightings in Texas waters
