Abstract

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in cooperation with the National Marine Fisheries Service conducts a continuing program to collect data on commercially harvested finfishes and shellfishes from Texas bays and from the Gulf of Mexico off Texas. Shrimp continued to be the most important commercial seafood product in Texas. They comprised 82.8% of the pounds and 94.6% of the value of total landings, while oysters, blue crabs and finfish accounted for 2.8%, 1.2%, and 1.1% of the value, respectively, and 17.2% of the total pounds landed in 1982. Total reported landings in 1982 amounted to 85,542,900 lb with an ex-vessel value of $185,771,200. This is the second lowest poundage recorded since 1977, but the highest value. The previous high value in 1981 was exceeded by over $14 million. From 1977 to 1982 the mean price/lb paid the commercial fisherman increased for all species except for the other shrimp price which decreased $0.69/lb. Finfish prices increased by $0.15/lb to $0.97/lb. Shellfish prices increased by $0.04/lb to $1.07/lb.
