Abstract

Oceanographic measurements were made during 1988 in the Houston Ship Channel/Galveston Bay region, as part of a quality assurance (QA) program for NOAA tidal current predictions. Because of extensive dredging and filling since the time of the last major circulation survey, we believed that changes occured in the circulation. Reports from local mariners indicated that the predictions from the NOAA Tables are no longer sufficiently accurate for navigation at some locations. Information on currents is needed at locations for which predictions are not available. Because of the growth of the port and the increase in maritime commerce, requirements for reliable current and water level predictions have increased substantially.
