Abstract

There are three types of dredging that directly affect oyster reefs: (1) removal of a live reef, (2) removal of a dead reef, and (3) removal of a buried reef. As Part of an extensive study on shell dredging in San Antonio Bay, Texas, the effects of siltaion on oysters and their associated fauna under experimental and natural conditions were examined. Experimental data on oyster growth and survival, spat attatchment, oyster-associated fauna, fouling organisms, and crab movements were correlated with data obtained by sampling the oyster reef complex inthe experimental area.
