Abstract
Three populations of Cyprinodon variegatus Lacepede were compared as to their abilities to withstand sudden osmotic shocks. A population from an area having large daily and seasonal changes in salinity showed a much greater tolerance than two populations from more stable environments. This difference in ability seems to be largely due to factors experienced during ontogeny and rearing of the individuals tested.
