Abstract

The economic contribution of shrimp producers to the Texas economy is estimatd through economic multiplier analysis. The total amount of shrimp landed in Texas in 1971 was 54.2 million lb with a value of $63.9 million. The estimated direct, indirect, and induced impact on the Texas economy from this was $197.1 million. The contribution to total economic welfare with respect to personal income was $56.8 million and employment created was 6,083 jobs. About 80% of this aggregated state-wide impact is concentrated in the Gulf of Mexico coastal region. The development of policies for use of the Gulf resources is discussed in relation to the economic contribution of shrimp production.
