Abstract

Approximately 15,500 people participated in 56 tournaments identified in six geographic regions on the Texas coast in 1983. A majority (60%) of the tournaments were held in the months of July (36%) and August (24%); 74% of all tournaments lasted 1-3 days. The age of tournaments ranged from 1 to 48 years, with 49% being tournaments of 1 to 3 years old. Of the 56 tournaments, 29% were held for the first time in 1983. The number of participants in individual tournaments ranged from approximately 30 to 2000. The total amount of money spent by participants for adult entry fees in 1983 was approximately $755,000. Spotted seatrout and red drum were the most popular species for tournaments, being listed by 43% and 35%, respectively, of those tournaments having a species preference for eligibility in tournament competition. Forty-six of the 56 tournaments maintained species preference listings. The remaining 10 tournaments accepted any and all species for competition eligibility.
