Abstract

A waste load evaluation survey of the Houston Ship Channel (Segments 1005, 1006, and 1007) and its side bays (Segments 2426, 2427, 2429, and 2430) was conducted on August 14-16, 1978. The water quality study was planned and conducted by Water Quality Assessment Unit personnel with assistance from Field Operations' District 7 and 8 offices, and the Modeling Section. Three vertical field profiles in transect were measured at each mainstem channel station from daylight to dark. Measurements of D.O., temperature, pH, and conductivity were made at 5 foot intervals from one foot below the surface to one foot above the bottom. Water samples collected for laboratory chemical analyses were composited vertically, horizontally, and over time. All side bay stations were sampled once; a field profile was conducted and a surface to bottom composite water sample was collected. Tributary stations were sampled on a diurnal basis also. Field measurements were made and water samples composited from one foot below the surface at each station. Tributary flows were taken from USGS gauges or measured in the field. All the major wastewater dischargers were provided containers and requested to composite samples of their effluents during the study period.
