Abstract

Leadership is a subject that has attracted increasing attention from both librarians and psychologists. The purpose of this article is to compare and contrast perpectives on leadership from these two fields. Studies of leadership conducted by librarians tend to be subjective and impressionistic. The work done by psychologists is generally more rigorous and empirical. Librarians and psychologists agree that both a participatory and a charismatic leadership style is important for motivating staff. They diverge on the subject of leadership versus management and on leadership personality traits.
