Description
In 1900, Pyrenees’ grain cargo caught fire on a voyage and the master beached Pyrenees on Sanatul Island in the Manga Reva Islands. Purchased in 1902 by San Francisco ship captain and owner, J. E. Thayer, Thayer single-handedly rebuilt the ship so that he could sail it to San Francisco where it was completely refit. Renamed Manga Reva, Thayer managed the ship for awhile and sold it to the Welch interests. In 1908, William Matson bought the Welch fleet, which included Manga Reva. Sold again in 1916, the Manga Reva was sunk by a German submarine in 1917. Manga Reva and Annie Johnson are in Oakland Creek in photograph 59a. Manga Reva anchored in 59b.
Annie Johnson, ex Ada Iredale was a little 997 ton iron bark (112.1’ x 31.1’x 21.6’) whose cargo of coal burned out in 1876. The redoubtable J. E. Thayer rebuilt the ship at Papeete, renamed it Annie Johnson, who again later sold it to William Matson. In 1925, Annie Johnson was converted to a four-masted schooner and given a diesel engine.
