Abstract

Description

Matthew Arnold's father, Dr. Arnold of Rugby School, often vacationed with his family at Hotel Bellevue in Thun, Switzerland. In one letter to Clough, Matthew Arnold mentioned returning to the hotel for the "sake of the blue eyes" of one young lady there. He met her there the following year. Nowhere does he mention her name, but he wrote a series of poems called "The Switzerland Poem" and refers to her as Marguerite. This cup is from a coffee and tea silver serving set, beautifully engraved on the side of each piece, "Hotel Bellevue, Thun."
