Title: Effect of oxygen on beta-lactam antibiotic production by immobilized Cephalosporium acremonium
Author: Khang, Yong Ho
Abstract: The study of cell immobilization is one of the most rapidly growing areas of modern biotechnology. The problem of oxygen transfer to immobilized aerobic respiratory cells poses a major constraint on the wider application of immobilized cell technology. This research was aimed at investigating the oxygen effect on the production of fi-lactam antibiotics when Cephalosporium acremonium was immobilized in calcium alginate beads. Oxygen concentrations in bullc liquid phase were controlled via air, pure nitrogen, and pure oxygen. The initial rates of fi-lactam antibiotic production were determined at various oxygen concentrations in both the free and the immobilized cell system.
