This thesis traces the development of alternative pedagogies to the oppressive model of the traditional, teacher-centered classroom perceived by political theorists, composition instructors, and cultural critics. Chapter 1 outlines the problems with what Paulo Freire terms "the banking concept of education" (53), including deception and strict discipline as constituting a status quo that disenfranchises students. Additionally, Chapter 1 describes institutional constraints helping to reinforce the status quo of oppressive pedagogy. |
