Abstract

An experimental and analytical investigation of a method of measuring the radial heat flow; through a hollow cylinder is presented. The two-dimensional, steady state, constant thermal conductivity solution for the temperature distribution in a hollow cylinder is derived; and a specific example is chosen for comparison with the one dimensional solution. The temperature difference between two radial positions within the cylinder wall is measured, and the radial heat flow is calculated by use of the one dimensional solution of the temperature distribution. The limits of the validity of the one-dimensional solution are discussed, and a probable percentage error incurred by the measuring technique is determined.
