This thesis traces the development of alternative pedagogies to the oppressive model of the traditional , teacher -centered classroom perceived by political theorists , composition instructors , and cultural critics . Chapter 1 outlines the problems with what Paulo Freire terms "the banking concept of education" (53 ) , including deception and strict discipline as constituting a status quo that disenfranchises students . Additionally , Chapter 1 describes institutional constraints helping to reinforce the status quo of oppressive pedagogy . |
