Abstract

In the winter of 2001, the Houston-Galveston Area Council received two grant opportunities to work with local governments to protect wetlands. The first grant was received from the Texas General Land Office to aid the City of Seabrook in implementing the Seabrook Wetland Conservation Plan, written by H-GAC in 1999. The second grant was received from the US Environmental Protection Agency to host four wetland workshops for local governments throughout H-GAC's 13-county region.....H-GAC also used funds to contract Shiner Moseley and Associates Inc. to prepare a wetland restoration plan for the highly visible Sloughs along Todville Road and State Hwy. 146. The advisory board has worked tirelessly to learn about wetlands and to preserve them in the City.....H-GAC applied and received a grant from EPA to host Wetland Workshops for Local Governments. The workshops have two focal points: one, to explain the importance of wetlands, and two, to provide communities a tool box to protect, restore and enhance wetlands.....Working with local governments to protect and restore natural resources, like wetlands, is critical to the success of the National Policies and Standards such as No net loss. Local governments hold the keys to resource protection and should be courted and trained by resource agencies. H-GAC is just one way to reach them.
