Abstract

The Texas State Department of Health is charged with the responsibility of administering the shellfish certification program for the State of Texas. This program consists of periodic inspections of shellfish processing plants together with sanitation surveys of coastal shellfish producing areas. These surveys are comprised of studies and investigations of all pollutional sources which might affect the bacteriological quality of shellfish. Also required is a sampling program of the waters in which oysters and other shellfish may be grown. This is a report which indicates the bacteriological quality of the principle oyster producing water in Galveston Bay and the many factors such as weather conditions, condition of contributing streams, tides, and other appropriate data which might influence the quality of oysters grown in this area.
