Abstract

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) in cooperation with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) conducts a continuing program to collect data on commercially harvested finfishes and shellfishes from Texas bays and from Texas territorial waters in the Gulf of Mexico. Based on the Monthly Marine Products Report (MMPR) the total finfish and shellfish bay and Gulf of Mexico landings combined decreased 12,304,700 lb and $34,189,700 in value from 1978-79 to 1979-80. A substantial decrease in landings was reported for red drum, Sciaenops ocellata (76,200 lb); spotted seatrout, Cynosion nebulosus (277,100 lb); black drum, Pogonias cromis (540,400 lb); snapper, including Lutjanus campechanus, L. griesus and Rhomboplites aurorubens (140,000 lb); brown and pink shrimp, Penaeus aztecus and P. duorarum (9,024,106 lb) and white shrimp, P. setiferus (5,652,700 lb). Substantial increases were reported for flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma and P. albigutta (20,700 lb); sheepshead, Archosargus probatocephalus (123,700 lb) ; blue crab, Callinectes sapidus (2,464,800 lb); oyster meat, Crassostrea virginica (124,800 lb) and other shrimp, including Hymenopenaeus robustus, Xiphopenaeus kroyeri and Sicyonia brevirostris (819,100 lb).
