Abstract

State biologists assisted U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel in conducting the annual January midwinter waterfowl inventory along the entire Texas Gulf Coast in 1970. Estimates of species numbers and locations of concentrations were recorded on tape from aircraft. The redhead duck population indicated a slight increase from the 1969 survey total of 144,303 to 167,138 in 1970. The total coastal waterfowl population was 1,168,371 birds for 1970 compared to 1,099,305 for 1969. Most significant was the increase in wintering mallards on the Upper Coast, the increase in total pintails, the increase in total ducks on the Lower Coast, and the decrease in total coots.
