Access to Map collection:

Maps may be used at the Information Center during Library hours , which vary according to the academic schedule. ARCHIVAL maps and all photographs require an appointment. Contact the Information Center at (409) 740-4703 to set an archival research appointment.

Description of Map Collection:  

 The Galveston Bay Information Center Map Collection contains more than 200 maps covering the Galveston Bay region. The collection consists of maps produced by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Galveston Bay National Estuary Program (GBNEP), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Texas Department of Transportation, and the Texas General Land Office. A more detailed description of each set of maps follows.


U.S. Geological Survey Publications 

Manmade and natural features such as roads, highways, towns, county and state boundaries, water areas, vegetation, names of geographic locations, land shapes and elevation are depicted.

This map set consists of 20 USGS quadrangles (maps) corresponding to GBNEP-12, Shoreline Survey for Unpermitted Discharges to Galveston Bay. Each map contains GBNEP discharge numbers with an arrow pointing to the approximate location of the facility or discharge. This set of maps is ARCHIVAL.

 

NOAA Publications

This set of Nautical charts was designed for navigational purposes. Charts range from small craft charts and marine facilities, to harbor, waterway (large and small), bay and offshore navigation. These maps contain depth information measured in feet or fathoms.

 

General Highway Maps

This set of maps was published by the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation, Transportation and Planning Division. These maps were produced for internal department use and include primarily manmade features such as roads and major cities, with some natural features such as prominent water bodies.

 

Galveston Bay Oyster Reef Maps
(now available online)

This map set corresponds to the report, "The Status of Oyster Reefs in Galveston Bay, Texas" (Accession #7014) by E.N. Powell, J. Song, and M. Ellis. Each of the 13 mapped areas contains information on bathymetry and oyster reefs, transect lines and oyster reefs, and bathymetry and transect lines. For this complete series of 41 maps refer to Acc# 8016 through Acc# 8056. For additional hydrodynamic grid and oyster reef information refer to Acc# 8250 through Acc# 8262. All of these maps are now available ONLINE.

 

General Land Office and County Maps

This set of maps was published by the Texas General Land Office and covers the counties of Brazoria, Chambers, Galveston and Harris. These maps contain information on property titles dating back to the 1800's. Please contact the Information Center for access to these maps.
