Abstract

Captain Eanes, an Air Force officer and one-time student at ASU, researched the battle of Sayler’s Creek at the West Texas Collection, and his father’s newspaper in Virginia published the article Eanes wrote based upon his research. The battle of Sayler’s Creek took place on 6 April 1865 as General Lee’s army retreated. By the end of the battle, 8,000 Confederates had been captured, the largest number of American soldiers ever captured in combat on the North American continent. The collection contains a special commemorative issue of the newspaper article, “The Battle of Sayler’s Creek,” by Captain Greg Eanes.
